Pursuant to the Food Act, the Estonian Agriculture and Food Board (PTA) has designated the LABRIS laboratories in Saaremaa, Tallinn, and Tartu to carry out analyses of drinking water (including mineral water).

Requirements for the supply and quality of drinking water for food producers and food business operators are described in national and EU laws. A summary of the requirements can be found on the website of the Agriculture and Food Board.

The analysis service is provided to both the public and private sectors, as well as to individuals who wish to check the quality of the water they consume.

All LABRIS service points in Rakvere, Saaremaa, Tallinn and Tartu issue sample containers and accept samples. If necessary, customers are advised on how to collect samples, either on site or over the phone.

The service portfolio of LABRIS includes the following drinking water testing packages:

  • package 1 – microbiological parameters (section 4 of Regulation No 61 of the Ministry of Social Affairs);
  • package 2 – routine monitoring of drinking water (section 10 of Regulation No 61 of the Ministry of Social Affairs).

The Saaremaa department as a regional laboratory carries out various chemical and microbiological analyses in addition to drinking water analyses:

  • from swimming pool water (No 80 of the Government of the Republic);
  • from bathing water (Regulation No 63 of the Ministry of Social Affairs);
  • from wastewater.
