Alcohol

Alcohol is a food group which consists of spirits and alcoholic beverages. Requirements for the handling of alcohol are mainly established by the Alcohol Act and the implementing provisions thereof. In addition to national legislation, the handling of alcohol is also regulated by regulations of the European Union. On the other hand, attention should also be paid to the requirements related to taxes, labelling, advertising, etc., as many of them also apply to the handling of alcohol.

National supervision of alcohol is exercised by the Agriculture and Food Board, whose responsibilities also include the administration of the national register of alcohol. The national register of alcohol is a database which processes data about the alcohol handled in Estonia. The purpose of collecting and processing data is ensuring efficient supervision and safe and compliant alcohol for the consumer. In most cases, the alcohol handled must be registered in the national register of alcohol. Further information is available on the website of the Agriculture and Food Board.

Pursuant to the Alcohol Act, the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture has authorised LABRIS to conduct official control on alcohol and analyses for registration. The analyses are performed in Tartu.

The laboratory conducts the analyses for registration on the basis of the table published on the website of the Agriculture and Food Board: analyses for registration. It is of the utmost importance for the alcohol operator to specify the type of product (first column of the table) when ordering the analyses, as this is the basis for the selection of the parameters to be determined.
